10 Books I have Shunned

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top ten books I will probably never read. But I am a fickle creature, so there are no guarantees.

Don't kill me for these choices.

Of course I gave the creepy woman the spotlight. Do you have a problem with that?

1. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I've never hated on Twilight. I haven't read anything by Meyer, so who am I to judge? But I really don't think I'd like it, and I don't think you can change my mind.

2. Mirror Sight by Kristen Britain. (Kristen Britain, you are one cruel, sadistic human being. Enough, already!) I've read the first four books in the Green Rider series. I can't say I was awed by any of them, but I liked them and was curious to see what happened next. Unfortunately I was a bit disgusted by the morals of Black Veil, and it was taking WAY too long to get. to the end. of the story. Seriously. The first book was published in 1998 and the series isn't even finished. (Five books have been published. Five.)

3. Any John Green book other than TFIOS because I've already wasted my life on it. But I won't lie. John Green is a seriously funny guy.

Ain't that the truth! (Source)

4. The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. I've read some reviews that have, quite frankly, disgusted me.

5. First Days by C.L. Stone. Because book number one killed brain cells.

6. Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card. Ender's Game didn't exactly wow me like I thought it would.
Yes it is, Ender. Yes it is. (Source)

7. Seeing Redd by Frank Beddor. GREAT concept, but the first book was so poorly written that I couldn't continue.

8. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Meh. Just doesn't sound appealing to me.

9. Fair is the Rose by Liz Curtis Higgs. I had some issues with the first book, Thorn in My Heart.

10. Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey. I just...can't. Dragon's Keep was too weird. I read it quite a while ago but I'm pretty sure I laughed in places I wasn't supposed to.
Haha. Ha. (Source)
11. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling.

Hahahaha. I'm kidding. Harry Potter rocks.

I don't hate any of these authors, I promise. (Okay, except Kristen Britain. *glares*)

My, what a critical, unfeeling post. I do think I'll go cry now.

Tell me, have you read any of these books? Do you wish to? And do you now hate me with a severe and burning passion?

  1. Interesting list of books for the week!! Here's my TTT post for this week: http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2015/05/top-ten-tuesday-ten-books-i-will.html

  2. I forgot about John Green when I was making my list, and I only came up with nine books. Darn it! I pretty much hated The Fault in Our Stars, so I'll be avoiding the rest of his books like the plague.

If you ever do read Twilight, look at it as an example of how not to write a book. Actually, Twilight itself isn't that bad... especially compared to the last book in the series, Breaking Dawn. If you ever want to read a book where the author throws out all the rules and mythology she just spent hundreds of pages building, look no further! That book still annoys me... and I read it years ago.

    1. Yikes. Thanks for the reassurance! I know a lot of people like Twilight, but I really don't think it's for me.

  3. Interesting list - I don't blame you one bit for Twilight. Definitely not worth it. As much as I liked Ender's Game, I haven't read any of the rest - they don't really interest me for some reason.

    1. It's strange that, of everyone I know who's read Ender's Game, nobody has read the rest of the series. I guess it didn't get as much recognition.

  4. I had Twilight on mine too, and John Green's other books, TFIOS was enough of a waste of lie for me! The Mortal Instruments series was also on my list.

    1. Wow! Someone else who hated TFIOS! I thought we were practically extinct! :D

  5. I absolutely loathed City of Bones and Twilight, so I can't say you're missing much by reading them. ;) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post!

  6. The Twilight series is average at best; if the basic plot does not interest you, not worth the read. You should also avoid The Host -- very slow; have to read about half the book before it becomes decent.

Speaker for the Dead is better than Ender's Game, but if you did not like the first book, reading the rest of the series is not worth your time when there are so many other books to read.

Agree with you about The Red Tent -- does not sound that worthwhile.

I enjoyed the Mortal Instruments series. If you like that genre, I would recommend trying it. However, if you do not care for magic/fantasy, the series is not for you.

    1. I'll have to make a note about the Host. I was undecided about that one, but I'll probably just not read it. Too many good books out there to spend your time on ones you think you may not enjoy! Thanks for dropping by!

  7. I am with you on the no Twilight thing, just no. I read the first book in the mortal instruments series and I didn't like it enough to continue. I don't think we are missing out on much. Love all the gifs :)

  8. Interesting list Ally! I don't really find City of Bones *that* appealing either...despite the hype. I did try to read it once, but it never really grabbed me. Twilight was my first foray into YA and I think I liked it more then than in hindsight now.

    1. Thanks, Eugenia! Yeah, I think a lot of people feel that way about Twilight.

  9. Ohh, I'm a HUGE John Green and Cassandra Clare fan, so I'm just going to crawl back into the shadows with my popcorn and YEAH. But still. xD Not every book has to appeal to everyone!! You're not missing much by skipping Twilight. xD I read it because of the insane amounts of hate...and it's actually not that bad. I've read worse. hehe. But it's not terrific.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. Aw, thanks for not shunning me, Cait! xD We welcome all kinds of book lovers here. ;) I almost, ALMOST read Twilight for the same reason. I just wanted to see if all of the hateful remarks were fair, but I changed my mind because I honestly didn't think I'd like it. Still...no hate from me!

  10. I've read Twilight, City of Bones, and I was gonna read Paper Towns, just because.
With Twilight, meh, you're not missing anything. It's okay, but there are enough problems (in my opinion) to write blog posts for a year.
City of Bones was exciting and well-written. Unfortunately though, I couldn't behind any of the romance, and it was a pretty big part of the book.

    1. Haha. I might have to reconsider Twilight, then. Might make for an interesting blog. XD

    2. Haha, well, I would read that.

  11. Twilight and the John Green books don't really seem like they would interest me either. The same goes for City of Bones, but another reason I won't read it is that the cover features a shirtless man, which is an immediate red flag for me. And then I won't read Harry Potter either because I'm not allowed to read it.

    1. That's another reason I'm wary to pick up City of Bones. I see covers like that and I'm like, "really?"

  12. At first I was like, HP WHAT?! But then I saw the just kidding, haha. I keep saying I'm not going to read anymore of John Green's books because I am consistently underwhelmed by them, but I bet you any money that I'll pick up Paper Towns or Looking for Alaska in the next few months, just because he's so popular. Who knows, maybe I was wrong the first time around?

    1. Just the reaction I was hoping for! Haha, sorry. And yes, popular books can be so hard to resist. Peer pressure is so unfair. :(
